Why I Built This
The Year I Chose Me
I have always been the magic maker. The hub of the family gatherings, the CEO of the home, the one who anticipates what everyone needs before they ask.
I took pride in it. For years I believed my calling was to raise others. I loved being present for my family. But somewhere inside all that giving, the things that mattered to me kept getting postponed.
A book idea sat on the back burner for almost two decades. A $500 spa certificate went unused for 14 years.
Then a short time after my mother passed away, I stood in a ballroom deciding whether to invest $10,000 in a year-long mastermind. It meant flying to Los Angeles every month and arranging for two or three people to cover everything I normally carried at home.
It took three people to cover what I was doing alone. I had never once counted.
Choosing myself would create disruption. Every practical reason told me not to do it.
I did it anyway.
It was more than joining a program. It was a declaration that I was worth the time, the investment, the support and the effort it would take to step away.
For one year, I stopped waiting for life to make room for me. I made the room.
And the disruption I was so afraid of? Everyone adjusted. The house kept running. Nothing broke.
That year changed me — not in a moment. It changed me because I practised that commitment for an entire year, and kept practising it in the years after.
